Community Connections: Daughters of the American Revolution
Celebrating 250 Years of American History Right Here in Eastern North Carolina
The United States of America is celebrating 250 years and as our nation celebrates this historic milestone, it's a great time to remember that some remarkable moments in our country’s story happened right here in eastern North Carolina.
In 1774, women in Edenton made history with what became known as the Edenton Tea Party, organizing one of the first political protests led by women in the American colonies. Just two years later, Patriots from across the region played a key role in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in Pender County, an important Revolutionary War victory. Even President George Washington visited Shallotte during his Southern tour in 1791, meeting with residents and experiencing the area firsthand.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, these local stories remind us that history is often closer than we realize. It lives in the communities, landmarks, and traditions that continue to shape our region today.
5 Scams to Watch Out for This Summer
Scammers don't take vacations, and summer is one of their busiest seasons. Here are five common scams making the rounds and how to avoid them.
-
Package Delivery Text Scams – You receive a text claiming there's a problem with a delivery and asking you to click a link. The message may look like it's from UPS, FedEx, or USPS, but the goal is to steal personal information.
Tip: Visit the carrier's website directly instead of clicking links in unsolicited messages.
-
Toll Road and Parking Fee Scams – Fraudsters send texts claiming you owe a small amount for unpaid tolls or parking fees. The amount is usually low enough to tempt people into paying quickly.
Tip: If you receive one of these messages, verify it through the official agency website before taking any action.
-
QR Code Scams – Fake QR codes are showing up on flyers, parking meters, and emails. Scanning them can take you to a malicious website designed to steal passwords or payment information.
Tip: Avoid or be cautious before scanning QR codes from unfamiliar sources.
-
Tech Support Impersonators – Someone calls, emails, or pops up a message claiming your computer or internet has a problem and asks for remote access or payment.
Tip: Never give strangers access to your devices. FOCUS Broadband will never call and ask for passwords or request payment through gift cards.
-
Vacation Rental Scams – Fraudulent listings and fake rental websites often appear during the summer travel season. Scammers may request payment outside trusted platforms.
Tip: Use reputable booking sites and avoid wiring money or paying through gift cards.
Stay Alert – If something seems urgent, unexpected, or too good to be true, slow down and verify before clicking or paying. A few extra minutes can save a lot of headaches.
